Kandel Kul Puja

Kandel kul puja (community worship) is the festival where all the people with the surname “kandel” get together at a pre-determined place and worship the deities of their community as per the rules and regulations. Me too am a Kandel , that’s why I am going to describe about it how we get it done.

We carry out the festival once a year mainly on the “Mangsir” i.e. on Nov/Dec. The day of celebration is fixed up around two months ago by the “Laamaas”, the persons within whom the deity is believed to be hidden. The celebration lasts for two days. Every Kandel is informed about he date of celebration. And yes ! we al the Kandels get together at the place so called “SITABAS” celebrate our community festival “Kul Puja”

The cause for us to get collected at Sitabas is our deities’ statue is kept there well in a temple. The place is so cool and natural; covered by greenery on all sides and plenty of water is available there.

On the first day, we all decorate the temple, sweep out the inner parts and clean the surroundings. Ropes with the colored papers are used and the active for all this is taken from the small kids who use their tiny hands to fix up the colored papers on the rope. The temple is well decorated with nice paintings; twigs of bamboo, shorea , piper, etc.. the food materials to be cooked for the next day is arranged by the elder members.

The more joyous moments at the first day get sprouted at the evening times. It is the period at which the presence of deities is best proved. A wick is kindled at the corner, viewable by on the male members of the kandel community. And the fresh young kandels in whom the deity has not entered yet are placed forward to call the deities to enter into their fresh souls. It is done by creating fumes of butter smoke placing it on the red hot fire
.

Whenever the invisible deity enters into the soul of any person, he starts exhibiting the extraordinary activities; shaking the whole body and foretelling the future; what will happen tomorrow and in the near coming future. The environment turns into a great laughter if the deities are well satisfied with the moral behaviors of the communal people; and turns into an uncommon situation like weeping, slapping and scratching others if the deities were disrespected.

The entrance of the deity into a fresh young one is examined for its realness. Sometimes evil spirits are found to be entering into the souls of the fresh ones and show the similar exhibitions as the deity. The reality of the deities entrance into the is examined by the elder ones, in whom the deity has already existed. There is a typical language so called as “KHAAM”. Nobody can speak this language unless the deity gets entered into their body. If the fresh ones who start showing extraordinary activities communicate well in this language, they are well respected by all and are requested to tell about future. But if they fail the communicate in the typical language, the deities in the elder ones punish them with anything handy.

The second days celebration springs up with great enjoyment since the early morning.
